SHA ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME
The SACRED ATHLETIC HEART HALL OF FAME was initiated in 1980 to honor the individual efforts that have contributed to the school's outstanding athletic success over the years. Requirements for selection are:
1. an athlete must be at least fifteen years out of school and
2. must have been recognized as an outstanding contributor to the athletic program. A sketch of each inductee along with a brief list of accomplishments hangs in the school hall.
2009 Sacred Heart Hall of Fame Inductees
The Sacred Heart Alumni Association is pleased to announce that three former athletic stars will be inducted into the Hall of Fame during homecoming halftime ceremonies on October 2, 2009. Dick Fabiano ’59, Ken Neyer ’63 and Kim Epple Hire ’83 will bring the total of enshrined athletes in the Hall to eighty.
The Hall was founded in 1980 to honor the athletes that have contributed to the tradition at the Academy. An athlete must be fifteen years from graduation to be considered.
Fabiano earned 12 varsity letters and held a school record 100 yard dash time of 10.3 seconds for over two decades. He also was a member of the record setting 880 yard relay and was all conference as a high jumper and end in football. Dick and his wife Mary Jane (Sowle), a high school classmate, live in Grand Rapids where Dick has made his career in Public Accounting and Manufacturing Consulting. The couple has been married 47 years and has four children and nine grandchildren.
Neyer accumulated 15 varsity letters at Sacred Heart including an 11’2” pole vault that still ranks as the second best in school history. He was MVP in baseball and track and scored all four touchdowns and an extra point in a 27-26 homecoming win in 1962. Ken was an officer in the Air Force after finishing college at Aquinas, settling in Traverse City upon discharge where he formed an oil and gas exploration company with his brother. The Neyers are currently in a family partnership that owns and operates the Metivier Inn and Harts Bed & Breakfast on Mackinaw Island. Ken and his wife Diane have two children and one grandchild.
Epple Hire accumulated nine varsity letters and was MVP in basketball, softball and volleyball. She earned all area honors in all three sports. Kim is a Registered Nurse at Midland Hospital. She and husband Dave (class of 1981) have two children, Aubry and Nick, both students at Sacred Heart.
