TRIP INFORMATION:
· Cost of the trip is $2566 for students.
· Initial non-refundable deposit of $300 is due to Close Up by November 26th. Mr. Durocher would like this money paid by November 11th – Make check to Sacred Heart Close Up. This will give
Maureen Starry time to ample time to make deposits, issue the check to Close Up, and allow the US Postal Service plenty of time to deliver.
· Garage Sale: Will be held in the Parish Center from 9am – 5pm on November 19th. (Set up is November 18th). Students can bring items to sell!
This year students in grades 9-12 will be traveling to Washington, D.C. and New York City to participate in the Close Up program. Close Up is the nation’s largest educational foundation and provides a non-partisan program of offering students a “close up” look at government in action. While on the program, students participate in academic and activity based exercises to learn more about the issues facing the nation. They will visit many of the Presidential monuments and war memorials, attend seminars which present speakers from the various branches and agencies of government, go up on Capitol and meet with Congressman Dave Camp, and Senators Levin and Stabenow. They will have opportunities to visit the Smithsonian Museums, Arlington National Cemetery, the Holocaust Museum and the Washington Monument. While in New York, the students will participate in a United Nations study visit, dine in Times Square, attend a Broadway show, visit Ellis and Liberty Islands, tour Wall Street and Ground Zero, walk the Brooklyn Bridge, and visit the Rockefeller Center.
The dates of the trip are March 25 – April 1, 2012. This is the week before spring break. In the past we have had students leave from Close Up and fly directly to meet parents already on spring break instead of flying back to Michigan first.
Fundraising opportunities are provided for students to raise the necessary funds for the trip. Historically, students have, on average, earned 50% of the required amount.
1. Pizza Discount Cards – September 12-23 with money turned in Sept. 26
2. Christmas Wreath Sale – for delivery prior to Thanksgiving
3. Max and Emily’s Classic Cheesecakes – for delivery before Christmas
The first meeting for the Close Up students is Friday, September 9th during lunch “B” in Mr. Durocher’s room.
